This magnificent park is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail and was recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Washington Oaks Gardens State Park consists of 425 acres of coastal scenery extending from the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean. Twenty acres of formal gardens are the centerpiece of this park. The gardens make remarkable use of native and exotic species, from azaleas and camellias to the exquisite Birds of Paradise, sheltered within a picturesque oak hammock. Visitors can picnic and fish from either the beach or the seawall along the Matanzas River. Activities include walking, bird watching, fishing, canoeing, hiking and cycling. If you like to get involved in your community, volunteering with the Friends of Washington Oaks, Inc. is a rewarding experience. Stop by the Gift Shop in the park on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The gardens are a magical place to hold a wedding. Information and reservations for such events can be made by calling 386-446-6783. This park is rich in history and natural beauty - don't miss this hidden gem of Flagler County.
