A total of 73,000 coastal and upland acres are within the GTM Research Reserve along the Intracoastal Waterway from northern St. Johns County to northern Flagler County, separated only by the rivers of St. Augustine. The GTM Research Reserve is one of 27 national estuary reserves that were designated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to improve the transfer of science to the management of coastal resources.  Three of the national reserves are located in the state of Florida under the management of the Department of Environmental Protection and Coastal and Aquatic Areas.
